A floor is the one part of your home you use every single day, so it pays to have it laid properly. I'm Jean du Plessis, your local handyman. I tile floors, walls, bathrooms and showers, lay laminate flooring, and replace the cracked and loose tiles that other people leave for later.

Floor and wall tiling
Most of what makes a tiled floor look good happens before the first tile goes down. I check that the surface is sound and level, then set the room out so the cuts fall where you won't notice them and the lines run straight from wall to wall. The result is even joints, flat tiles and no slivers in the doorway.
Bathrooms and showers
A tiled shower only stays dry if what is behind the tiles has been sealed. Because I also do waterproofing and plumbing, the same person seals the shower, moves the pipes and lays the tiles. You don't have to line up three trades and hope they arrive in the right order.
Laminate flooring
Laminate is a quick way to replace worn carpet or a dated floor, and a room can look completely different in a day or two. I check the floor underneath is level and dry, lay the boards with the gap they need to expand, and finish the edges neatly. Laminate doesn't like standing water, so for bathrooms I'll recommend tiles instead.
Tile repairs
One cracked tile or a patch that sounds hollow underfoot is worth fixing before it spreads or lets water in. I lift the damaged tiles, sort out the cause and relay them. If a leak did the damage, I can repair the plumbing in the same visit.

Tiling and flooring questions I get asked
Do you charge for a quote?
No. I come out, measure up and give you a written quote free of charge, with no obligation to go ahead.
Can you tile over my existing tiles?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the old tiles are firmly stuck down and whether the extra height causes a problem at doors. I check both when I quote.
Will you replace just a few broken tiles?
Yes. Small repairs are welcome. It helps if you still have spare tiles from the original job, because an exact match can be hard to find.
Can I have laminate in a bathroom or kitchen?
I don't recommend it for bathrooms, where water sits on the floor. Kitchens are possible with care. I'll tell you honestly what will last in each room.
How long will the job take?
It depends on the size of the area and the preparation needed. Your written quote includes the time I expect it to take.
